Mind and Body

There can be little doubt that the stroke recovery journey involves a complex, and ever changing, interaction between the mind and the body of the stroke survivor. Whereas most of the focus during the acute and subacute stages of stroke recovery is on the recovery of body functions affected by the stroke, the post-clinical (or community) stages of stroke recovery involve an ongoing ‘battle’ between the mind and the body of the stroke survivor. Emma Gee sums up this ‘battle’ beautifully in this statement …

It’s not what happens to you that matters, it’s how you choose to deal with it.

In other words, how does the mind of the stroke survivor come to terms with the impacts of physical, sensory, cognitive and communication changes caused by the stroke.

Here is a list of documents and websites that provide general information about how the mind and body interact, both before and after a stroke.
